Apenas vi do dia a luz brilhante

Apenas vi do dia a luz brilhante

Lá de Túbal no empório celebrado,

Em sanguíneo carácter foi marcado

Pelos Destinos meu primeiro instante.

Aos dois lustros a morte devorante

Me roubou, terna mãe, teu doce agrado;

Segui Marte depois, e enfim meu fado,

Dos irmãos e do pai me pôs distante.

Vagando a curva terra, o mar profundo,

Longe da Pátria, longe da ventura,

Minhas faces com lágrimas inundo. 

E enquanto insana multidão procura

Essas quimeras, esses bens do mundo,

Suspiro pela paz da sepultura.
