"Fim de Verão" - Poema de Paulo Henriques Britto

Jim Daly (American painter, born 1940), Summer’s End

Fim de Verão

XIV

A noite total tarda a chegar:
aproveite-se a luz que há.

É um lume sensato, difuso,
que não dissipa o lusco-fusco

porém o disfarça e matiza,
atenuando o tom de cinza

com laivos quase sinceros
de azul, vermelho e amarelo,

proporcionando às retinas
já habituadas à rotina

de emprestar às sombras de agora
tons subtraídos da memória

uma oportunidade tardia
de gozar um quase dia.

Quase, sim: melhor do que nada,
melhor que o nada.

Jim Daly, The Immigrant Spirit, 1992

At the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, a concessionaire who was selling ice cream ran out of cups. The concessionaire next to him was selling crisp, wafer-like pastry baked on a flat waffle iron. It was his idea to roll one of his wafers into a cornucopia, let it cool, and put a scoop of ice cream into it.
The idea was an immediate hit and the "World's Fair Cornucopia", or ice cream cone, was born. Both the concessionaires were immigrants, and in my painting, The Immigrant Spirit, I wanted to show that spirit of enterprise and innovation.
The same spirit brought the immigrants through Ellis Island and carried them through the new land. Thy were truly "pillars of a nation."
